ABOUT THE SANCTUARY TRUST
Sanctuary Trust was formerly known as Caring Hands and was set up in 2011 at a former guest house in St. Aubin.
The original founders, a group of committed Christians and concerned parishioners in St. Brelade, were troubled by the lack of anywhere in the Island that could be identified as a sanctuary for men facing major crises in their lives.
Whilst acknowledging the excellent work undertaken by other charities working with the homeless, the founders felt that something more encompassing was needed for those whose issues were more than just homelessness. The early days were helped by the support of the churches of St. Brelade, which continue to be key sponsors in the work of the Trust and generous individuals who understood the need for such a service.

TIM’S 12 PARISH SLEEP OUT
The CEO of the JCRA, Tim Ringsdore is going to sleep out one night a month at each of Jersey’s 12 Parish Halls during 2023, to raise awareness of the work of the Sanctuary Trust and raise funds for the charity.
Tim is well known for undertaking personal challenges for local charities. In 2022 he walked every road in Jersey (over 700 miles) to raise funds for the JSPCA and Autism Jersey.
As a Trustee of Sanctuary Trust, when his colleagues nominated the organisation as their chosen charity for 2023, Tim decided it was only right he should put his time (and his shut eye) to personally recognise their commitment.
The Challenge
Over the course of 2023, Tim will spend one night each month sleeping outside one of the 12 parish halls with only a sleeping bag for cover.
Anyone who has experienced sleeping rough or has taken part in the charity’s annual Sleep Out will know that this will be an incredibly tough undertaking and a very worthwhile fundraising challenge.
Tim said: “Spending 12 nights sleeping rough will be tough, but it’s nothing compared to what so many have to endure night after night. My hope is that by sleeping out in every parish, literally presenting the problem on our doorstep, we will start to address homelessness as a community.”
Sanctuary Trust Chairman Frank Walker OBE added: “This is a huge commitment from Tim to raise awareness and funds for Sanctuary Trust. It’s going to be physically and mentally gruelling, particularly in the colder months; one night is uncomfortable so I commend him for doing 12. His challenge is yet another example of the extremely dedicated trustees we have on the Sanctuary Board, who always go the extra mile to support the charity.”
